Du ¨Théâtre canadien¨ des années soixante au théâtre multimédia contemporain, ce qu'on retrouve exposé sur la scène apparaît souvent comme les échos transfigurés de l'histoire des trente dernières années. Privilégiant le point de vue des auteurs, le document montre à l'aide d'archives, d'extraits de pièces et d'entrevues, l'émergence du théâtre de création, qui est, selon les mots de l'auteur et historien, Jean-Claude Germain: ¨Un exemple unique dans le monde: la naissance d'une dramaturgie moderne, typiquement québécoise, vécue pratiquement sous nos yeux.¨ Le film s'articule en deux parties, distinctes et complémentaires. La première partie couvre l'époque d'émancipation culturelle qui suivit la Révolution tranquille jusqu'à la période d'affirmation collective inscrite dans les années 70. La deuxième partie s'ouvre sur les années 80 où apparaît une nouvelle génération d'auteurs et de metteurs en scène et de nouveaux lieux. Ce courant dramaturgique entraîne une remise en question de la pratique théâtrale et un virage vers des thèmes plus intimistes (le corps, le féminisme, l'homosexualité) traités à travers des formes éclatées qui vont permettre la reconnaissance sur la scène internationale.
