SHORT BIO.

Richard Ciupka started as camera

assistant and graduated to

operator to become part of the

special effects camera team for

Wally Gentleman BSC, the man

partly responsible for the effects on

Stanley Kubrick’s “2001 the Space

Odyssey”.

In 1977, he started working as a

Director of Photography, his name

appeared on 18 feature films shot

in Europe, Canada and the USA.

During those years, Richard won awards for his cinematography at the ACE awards in

Los Angeles, the Film Craft Awards and CSC Awards, and Gémeaux in Canada and the

British Society of Cinematographers nomination.

As a cinematographer, Richard had the pleasure to work for such famed film directors

as Louis Malle on “Atlantic City” which garnered 5 Oscar nominations and the Lion d’or

in Venise in 1982

Then, in France, for CLaude Chabrol on three feature films, “The Blood of Others”, “Les

Liens de Sangs” and “Violette Nozière” which won in Cannes in 1978.

During that time, Richard photographed stars like, Jodie Foster, Sophia Loren, Suzan

Sarandon, Gena Davis, Mary Tyler Moore, Robert Duval and many others.

In 1987 he opened his own production house in Montreal becoming a Producer/

Director/Cinematographer.

In advertising Richard Produced ,directed and photographed over 520 TV commercials

for such clients has GM, Mc Donalds, Pepsi, American Express, Tim Horton’s, Molson

and At&T.

During that time he won 8 advertising awards in Canada and the USA.

In 1992, Richard produced and directed the first 14 episodes of the “Heritage Minutes”

for Canada Post and the Bronfman Foundation. They were short dramas on great

Canadian historical moments.Since then, Richard directed six theatrical feature films, two television series and two

Movies of the Week.

In 2004 and 2005, he got the best Directing award at the Hamburg Film festival and the

Cinémagic Film festival in Dublin for these two family films “La Mystérieuse Mlle C” and

“L’incomparable Mlle C.” Plus a Genie and Jutra nominations for his thriller on the

Russian Mafia entitled “Le Dernier Souffle”.

Since 2013 Richard is back as a DOP, he has finished 3 years (34 episodes) on the

fiction series “Nouvelle Adresse” for which he received a Gémeaux award for best fiction

Cinematography in 2015 and 2 nomination.

In 2016/17 he photographed the TV movie “Love Locks” for Hallmark in Paris and two

pilots destined for Netflix produced by Lune Rouge/Reflector media.

Richard photographed the TV series "Un lien Familial" for Sophie Lorain at ALSO Prod.

Gagnant du prix du meilleur film au festival de Hambourg en 2003 et du prix de la meilleure réalisation à Belfast en Irlande.

Meilleur Box Office pour un film familial au Québec.
